Former Nigeria midfielder Friday Ekpo has criticized the Super Eagles players following their seemingly unconvincing performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers during the March international break.
Nigeria, ranked third in Africa, defeated Rwanda 2-0, who are 31st in the rankings, before they drew 1-1 against the 24th ranked Zimbabwe at home in Uyo.
These results placed Nigeria in the fourth position with seven points, six behind group leaders Bafana Bafana in the Group C standings. Following the two matches, the Super Eagles faced criticism from several of their legends.

One of the recent legends expressing their concerns is Ekpo, who fears that if Nigeria do not win against South Africa, it will signify the end of their hopes to qualify for the World Cup.
Hugo Broos' soaring Bafana and Nigeria are scheduled to clash in September when the World Cup Qualifying campaign resumes. Ekpo expressed his disappointment on the Super Eagles, going as far as calling them ants.
"African football has progressed significantly," Ekpo said per Pulse Nigeria.

"Nigeria still views some of these countries as small, but we need to step up as well. We are struggling to win matches against these teams.
"We are no longer giants; we have become ants. We cannot hold onto the ball and just pass it sideways. If we do not defeat Bafana Bafana in South Africa, our World Cup qualifying dream is over."
