'Hayi khona' - Honest word on Chiefs keepers

Kaizer Chiefs great Joseph 'Banks' Setlhodi is not entirely impressed with the performance of the team's current number one, Bruce Bvuma, following the Soweto giants' latest result.

Bvuma could be accused of gifting opposition strikers easy tap-ins lately due to his lack of awareness in goals before parrying the ball, as was the case against Golden Arrows.

In 19 appearances, the 29-year-old has conceded 18 goals.

Something that 'Banks' says does not make for good reading for a Chiefs goalkeeper.

After all, over the years, the club has gained notoriety for producing, if not attracting, quality net-minders.

"I don't know what is happening at Kaizer Chiefs. They never had problems with goalkeepers throughout the years," notes the legendary former keeper.

"But now it seems everything is broken at Chiefs. All these past years, even if Chiefs were not performing well, their goalkeepers were always there to save them. Goalkeepers used to win games for Chiefs, but today, hayi khona.

"The worst part is that all the goalkeepers they have are not consistent. They make blunder after blunder.

"If a goalkeeper is not doing well, then the whole team will not be doing well. All title-winning teams have good goalkeepers," adds Setlhodi.

The man who kept goal during the 1970s right through to the '80s says Bvuma can be a good goalkeeper, if not for his penchant to panic even when not under pressure.

"He is not well composed, he doesn't show full ownership of the penalty area. A goalkeeper must put pressure on the opponents, but the likes of Bruce can't read games.

"All of these goalkeepers are the same. Especially these South African goalkeepers, they are the worst.

"Even me, at my age, I can go there and be a good goalkeeper. Sit on a chair, and stand up only when the ball is coming to my direction."
