Riveiro stays true to his word with Pirates exit

Jose Riveiro's exit from the Orlando Pirates job at the end of the season will keep the Spaniard as a man of his word.

Pirates have been keen to retain Riveiro based on all the good that he has done at the club, lifting five trophies since he took over in June 2022.

Riveiro has kept Bucs breathing in the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League, semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, and the Betway Premiership.

As the club starts the process of finding his replacement, Riveiro's words after running down his contract in his previous job will ring loud.

"Firstly, I don't think that as a coach you have to spend more than three years in the same place," Riveiro said after leaving his previous job at Inter Turku in Finland after running down his three-year contract.

He was impressive in his time at Inter Turku but made it known that after three years he needed a new challenge, which then came at Pirates.

"For me, it (three years) is the maximum with exceptions of course, depending on the club philosophy and how much you renovate the squad year after year, and like I said before, how ambitious that club is to make every year different.

"In this case and in this context that I have, it's around that three years is the proper time to leave and look for a different challenge, and to the playing group (FC Inter Turku) to have a new face in the next winter who is going to tell them the same song but with a different music maybe.

"Different face, different motivation, and ideas of course.

"For the fans also, I think they need something new regularly, so I think it is good.

"It is not good to feel comfortable somewhere, where it is fine and nobody is critic with me, and I'm getting good results.

"Not going so far anymore but I think it is not positive, and you have to move the chair regularly.

"It is the way to improve the club and the way to improve for us as coaches and it is the way to improve for the players.

"So, if a player has the same coach for way too long a period, the improvement will decrease, it is logic," said Riveiro in an extensive interview with Youtube channel Panorama Football.
