Players union weighs in on Royal AM

The Footballers Union of South Africa [FUSA] has warned those who are bidding for Royal AM to first make sure their coffers are full enough to run a Premier Soccer League club.

Bloemfontein Celtic are said to be winning the race.

According to FUSA Secretary General Taelo Motloung, they are keeping a close eye on the Royal AM situation as they looking to protect their members.

"As Fusa, we are looking into this very closely. We are aware of the circulating invitation to those who may feel they are fit enough to buy the club to come forward until the 14th of March, and it will be announced on Monday who won the bidding," Motloung tells KickOff.

"Bidders must prove they will be able to support the club financially.

"So whoever buys the club must also buy its debts. It's what we call a buying-in concern. They must do their due diligence about the debts and things like signing on fees that are still owed.

"We expect the contracts of the players to be taken care of. What is happening right now is that SARS wants their money, and the only way to get their money is if the team can be sold. Last time I checked, they owed SARS about R40 million," he added.

"People mustn't come here with their last R14 million because we don't want issues. We have seen that movie before where somebody would come with his last R2 million to buy a club and fails to pay the seller's debts and that time the seller is nowhere to be found.

"And when we as a union approach the buyer, the buyer says 'No, me, I bought the club, not the players'.

"So we plead with the interested buyers to do their due diligence because you may find out very late that the club's debts now amount to R70 million in total. So let the buyer be financially healthy.

"Our interest in this deal it's the players, we don't want a situation where we find a contracted players broke."
