Soccer City must be called FNB Stadium

After the 2010 World Cup, FNB were required to approach a court to prevent the sale of its naming rights by a third party.

In 2010 the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg confirmed FNB’s right to name the stadium as ‘FNB Stadium’. The judgement was taken on appeal and the Supreme Court of Appeal found in favour of FNB.

An interim court order obtained this week requires Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) to refer to the venue and or the Stadium whether direct or indirectly, only as the ‘FNB Stadium’.

No reference will be made to the Soccer City Complex or Soccer City or any other name and or venue.

For the time being, this court order resolves the on-going dispute in terms of the conduct of a third party and confirms the stadium name as ‘FNB Stadium’.
