Argentina boss annoyed at 'crazy' Messi question

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni was visibly annoyed at a "crazy" question about national team captain Lionel Messi at his latest press conference.

The 36-year-old shows no signs of retiring after leading his national side to 2022 FIFA World Cup glory and helping his new club Inter Miami to a Leagues Cup triumph earlier this year.

Messi, who is currently on international duty after returning from a recent injury, put on a sparkling cameo after coming off the bench during Argentina's 1-0 win over Paraguay in a 2024 FIFA World Cup qualifier last Friday, hitting the post but failing to score.

With his team preparing to take on Peru in another qualifier on Wednesday morning, the Albiceleste boss was quizzed about what would happen when the former FC Barcelona talisman decides to retire, and he was not pleased with the line of questioning.

"Let's keep in mind that he is still here. What a way to think about 'when he is gone,'" Scaloni responded, according to Goal.

"The truth is that he is still active, let's leave him alone, are we already retiring him?

"We commit hara-kiri (suicide by sword), we are all crazy."

With the Miami star having missed out on a succession of games for the Florida-based club before the international break, the Argentina head coach also revealed that he is recovering well and is in contention to play against Peru too.

"Leo is fine. He has been adding minutes of training. We will make the decision. It's a matter of minutes, of how much he can play," Scaloni added.

"If he's well, you know what I think, he will play. We always try to play those that are at 100% or close to 100%.

"It is very difficult for everyone to be at their best in these games so there may be a variation with respect to the game against Paraguay."
