Europe's most prolific goalscorers in 2018/19

Lionel Messi clinched a sixth European Golden Boot trophy in the 2018/19 campaign, but the FC Barcelona star could only muster a third-place finish in the ranking of the goalscorers with the best minutes-per-goal ratios in Europe.

Messi, 31, has scooped up his third successive top scorer accolade and sixth Golden Boot award overall, having clinched the title in 2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2016/17, 2017/18 and now 2018/19.

The Blaugrana skipper's final tally in Spain's top flight this season was 36 goals in 34 games, three strikes more than second-placed Kylian Mbappe, with the 2019 Ligue 1 Player of the Year having found the back of the net on 33 occasions in 29 Ligue 1 encounters.

Planet Football recently compiled a list of footballers with the best minutes-per-goal tallies this season hailing from the Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1, with players requiring a minimum of 10 goals in their respective league campaigns to be considered for the ranking.

At the summit of the podium is Borussia Dortmund attacker Paco Alcacer, who, despite being handed just 11 starts for the Bundesliga outfit, finished the 2018/19 campaign with a total of 18 goals.

Alcacer, 25, made history in his side's 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich in November 2018, when he scored his eighth goal of the campaign after spending 218 minutes on the pitch, as per the Bundesliga's official website.

The super-sub required just 31 minutes as a sub to score a hat-trick for BVB against Augsburg in October and averaged a goal every 67 minutes in the 2018/19 Bundesliga campaign.

Mbappe is in second spot, having registered a goal every 71 minutes. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner was given added responsibility by the Ligue 1 champions this season after a foot injury to fellow teammate Neymar, which resulted in the Brazilian missing much of the campaign.

The former AS Monaco star repaid the faith shown in him by Thomas Tuchel, and pipped Messi to second place in this ranking.

Despite the Spanish giants only clinching the LaLiga title in 2018/19, Messi performed above expectations and ended the season as both LaLiga's top marksman and the top goalscorer across Europe's top five leagues, averaging a goal every 75 minutes in Spain's top flight.

Other forwards in the ranking include PSG star Edinson Cavani and Manchester City record scorer Sergio Agueroscroll through the gallery above to see all the names!
