Lionel Messi and Franco Armani save the day for struggling Argentina in 1-1 draw against Paraguay

A penalty scored by Barcelona star Lionel Messi saved the day for Argentina as they salvaged a draw against Paraguay in the Copa America on Wednesday.

Messi scored from the spot just before the hour mark at Mineirao Stadium to level matters through a penalty that was awarded after a VAR review, after an opposition defender was judged to have handled the ball in the area.

Messi's goal cancelled out Richard Sanchez's 37th minute opener, as the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Argentina also have goalkeeper Armani to thank for avoiding defeat on the night. Five minutes after Paraguay opened the scoring, Armani pulled off a save to deny Derlis Gonzalez from the penalty spot, keeping Argentina in the game.

Two-time Copa America champions Argentina, who are looking to end a 26-year drought, are bottom of Group B following their 2-0 defeat to Colombia and 1-1 draw with Paraguay.

They do, however, still have a chance to progress to the next stage, but they know that there will be no room for error.
