OFFICIAL: England coach makes huge decision on future

Gareth Southgate has now announced a major decision regarding his England future.

The man who guided England to the final of the 2024 UEFA European Championship has confirmed that he will be parting ways with the Three Lions after 102 matches at the helm.

After reaching the decider of the continental competition, England fell just short of winning the tournament, losing 2-1 to an electrifying Spanish team.

It was a disappointing evening for what Southgate would reveal was his last game in charge.

With the position now vacant, the hierarchy will be assessing possible successors for the role.

According to The Guardian, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, former Brighton Hove Albion manager Graham Potter, and ex-Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel have been shortlisted as candidates to take over the England national side.

Southgate, meanwhile, has stated that he was proud of the players he took with him to compete at the EUROs hosted in Germany.

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all," the 53-year-old said, per England Football's official website.

"But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.

"I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football. In that time, including eight years as England men's manager, I have been supported by some brilliant people who have my heartfelt thanks."

Southgate initially took the position as caretaker manager following the departure of Sam Allardyce in 2016, but managed to make the position his own.

After stepping into the hot seat, the former defender led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He then took his team to the final of the 2021 EUROs, and that was followed by a quarter-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
