Robinho to serve nine-year prison sentence in Brazil

Former Brazil international Robinho will serve a nine-year prison sentence in Brazil.

In 2017, Robinho was convicted in Italy to nine years in prison for his role in a group sexual assault back in 2013 while he was still playing for AC Milan.

Italy had to seek his imprisonment in his home nation as Brazil does not extradite nationals.

On 20 March, a Brazilian court that the former Manchester City forward must serve out his nine-year prison sentence in his home nation.

Robinho's defence can appeal the ruling to the  Superior Tribunal of Justice (STJ) and Federal Supreme Court (STF), but eight of the ten votes in the STJ came for the player's sentence.

The former Real Madrid recently claimed his prison sentence was due to racism in Italy.

"I was convicted in Italy unjustly for something that did not happen and I have all the evidence to show that," the 40-year-old told Record TV.

"I played four years in Italy and I got tired of seeing stories of racism. Unfortunately it happens today. That happened in 2013 and today we are in 2024, which leads me to believe that the same people who do nothing against racism are the same ones who they condemned at my trial.

" If my trial were for a white person, it would be totally different, without a doubt."
