With just days to go before the 2020 UEFA European Championship gets underway, title hopefuls the Netherlands have been dealt a major blow.
The Netherlands, who were the beaten finalists at the 2019 UEFA Nations League, will be without one of their star players at the upcoming Euros after Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek was forced to withdraw through injury.
"Donny van de Beek has withdrawn from the European Championship," the Royal Dutch Football Association announced in a statement on Tuesday. "The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury."
It has also been confirmed that the former Ajax Amsterdam star will not be replaced ahead of the tournament, which is set to commence on Friday, with national team boss Frank de Boer electing to head into the competition a man short.
"As a result, the 19-time international, who last played minutes in Orange in March during Gibraltar - Netherlands (0-7), is not available in time for the European Championship," the statement added. "National coach Frank de Boer will not call up a replacement for Van de Beek.
"The Netherlands will play its first group match against Ukraine on Sunday, June 13. On Thursday, June 17, Austria will be the opponent, while the group stage will conclude with a meeting with North Macedonia on Monday, June 21. All duels take place in the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam."
