Refiloe Jane says Equatorial Guinea goal gave Banyana Banyana a wake-up call

Banyana took a 2-0 lead on Wednesday through midfielder Linda Motlhalo and Mpumi Nyandeni, but conceded in first-half stoppage time. In the second half, however, Banyana were ruthless and bagged five goals to collect maximum points again after the 1-0 victory over Nigeria in their opening group match on Sunday.

“It was not an easy win, looking at the way we started the game, getting two goals and then getting a goal against us. It somehow kind of gave them a chance to say they can still come back and they tried to make things difficult for us. But then come the second half we had to up it a bit and attack and capitalise on their mistakes and score more goals,” Jane, who scored Banyana’s third goal early in the second half, told SAFA Media.

“I think sometimes we just get carried away. Maybe we thought we have the game in our hands, we got a bit complacent. The goal they scored gave us a wake-up and not take things for granted.”

The star of the show was Thembi Kgatlana, who scored a brace and set up Nyandeni and Jane for their goals.

Banyana are top of the group on six points, with seven goals scored and just one conceded.

Nigeria beat Zambia 4-0 in the other group match to keep their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals alive.
