Winless Sundowns pick up a point in Morocco

Mamelodi Sundowns picked up a second point in the CAF Champions League group stages following a 1-1 draw against AS FAR Rabat on Saturday evening.

Masandawana unleashed the tried and tested in Peter Shalulile, Lucas Ribeiro, Mothobi Mvala, Teboho Mokoena, Khuliso Mudau and Bathusi Aubaas particularly.

It was a difficult start for the South African champions who battled to get deliveries in-behind and penetrate the North African counterparts.

FAR contained a portion of the visitors ventures to move in an advanced position thereby urged the men from Tshwane to track back and hold out their lines.

Masandawana were forced to make a substitution midway into the first period as Mvala was stretchered off and replaced by Mosa Lebusa.

The two teams refused to give much away as the match headed to halftime, with much of the play centred around the middle.

However, ASFAR were energised after the break and threatened the lead through a free-kick over the wall by Al Fahli but Ronwen Williams pushed across to parry away.

Sundowns didn't lose momentum and remained lively in their pursuit to making the deadlock amidst having little to no space on the ball and every move carefully guarded.

A lapse of concentration by the host allowed the visitors a route in as Iqraam Rayners combined with a route-one ball from Williams and volleyed in first-time.

Masandawana put on a double substitution after going ahead, with Thapelo Morena on for Aubaas and Lebohang Maboe on for Ribeiro.

The home team bounced back eight minutes later when captain Mohamed Hrimat ran into the area to get onto a right-sided cross and tapped in easily.

Sundowns desperately searched to regain the lead through a flood of chances a couple of minutes to full-time with Lebusa, Rayners and Shalulile but neither profited.

Masandawana finished the game with ten after Aubrey Modiba picked up his second yellow card in the closing stages, but the visitors were able to hold on for the point.

Confirmed line-ups:

Mamelodi Sundowns: Williams, Khoza, Mvala, Mudau, Modiba, Mokoena, Allende, Aubaas, Rayners, Shalulile, Riberio

Subs: Onyango, Lebusa, Sales, Maema, Mashego, Kodisang, Mkhulise, Morena, Maboe
