The top 10 goalscorers in CAF African Champions League of all-time

Ahead of the upcoming 2019/20 CAF Champions League group stage here are the top 10 scorers in the competition's history.

On Tuesday evening Tanzania striker Mbwana Samatta, who's reportedly being tracked by Premier League clubs, scored against European champions Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.

It marked another major milestone for the prolific striker who started his career with Simba Sports Club before moving to TP Mazembe - where he exploits sees him ranked fifth in CAF Champions League history.

Before moving to Belgian champions Genk in January 2016, the 26-year-old netted a credible 20 goals in 40 appearances. 

The only other footballers to score more than 20 goals in the competition include Al Ahly legends Flavio, Emad Motaeb, Mohamed Aboutrika and Mazembe icon Tresor Mputu.

Another player from the Vodacom Ligue 1 giants who features in Dioko Kaluyituka, who netted 18 goals in 33 games before earning a lucrative move to the Middle East.

Former Zimbabwe striker Edward Sadomba, who once lined up for Maritzburg United and Dynamos in South Africa during the early 2000s is ranked seventh.

However, it was his during his time with Al Ahli and Al Hilal in Sudan where he's goals earned him a place in the record books with 18 goals in 43 appearances.

With North African sides notably dominating the competition since it's inception in its current format in 1997, it comes as no surprise to see the list dominated by players from Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.

Mohamed Barakat is another member of the famous Red Devils squad that lifted five Champions league titles during their golden era, while Yannick N'Djeng and Oussama Darragi complete the top 10.

While there are no South African representatives in the list, Mamelodi Sundowns stars Themba Zwane and Sibusiso Vilakazi are the highest-scorers in the competition with seven goals each.
