EXCLUSIVE: Egyptian giants chasing Pirates coach

In exclusive news, KickOff can reveal that a North African giant has offered Jose Riveiro the job of head coach starting from next season.

Al Ahly have parted ways with Swiss-born mentor Marcel Koller after the team was knocked out of the CAF Champions League on away goal rule following a 1-1 second leg draw in the semi-finals on Friday.

Koller was met with water bottles from the stands as he made his way out of the pitch at the Cairo International Stadium. The writing was on the wall as it had been mentioned prior to the game that his future was dependant on the result against Sundowns.

He has won two Champions League trophies during his tenure as head coach of the Red Devils.

According to a source close to Al Ahly, the club has already sent representatives to negotiate with Riveiro to take over prior to next season.

The Spaniard’s contract with Orlando Pirates is set to expire in June and it has since been confirmed he will not be staying on beyond that.

“Al Ahly has put a mouth-watering offer for Jose Riveiro. The coach could be tempted to move to Egypt next season. The deal is highly possible,” said the source.

The man who turns 50 in September has won five trophies with The Buccaneers and is currently in the chase for both the Betway Premiership and Nedbank Cup titles after the disappointment of a Champions League semi-finals exit.
