Stellies finally off the mark in Confed Cup group stages

Stellenbosch FC got their first win in Group B on the CAF Confederation Cup after edging Desportivo Lunda-Sul 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Maroons boss Steve Barker opted on the front-foot from the start and showed a front trio of Andre De Jong, Sanele Barns, Ashley Cupido.

Having been played off the park last Sunday against RS Berkane, the Maroons entered proceedings on zero points after defeats in their opening two matches in the group.

Lunda fashioned out the first scare on ten minutes when Garcia Dias' swerving right-footed effort brought Sage Stephens to make a save.

The Maroons were clear though inside the midway mark as De Jong connected with Ismael Toure to unleash from the area, but he was parried by the upright.

Stellies fancied another chance a minute before the break through a header in the area by Thabo Moloisane, but he missed target.

On the other hand, Lunda had a similar chance on the brink of the interval as a rising header by Cavalcante Ferreira shaved the goal of Stephens and concluded the first half.

Barker's men started the second half like a house on fire with Cupido going wide following a shot inside the area after meeting Stephens's long-pass.

The Maroons continued to up momentum five minutes in and saw Jayden Adams nestle the upright with a cross from Barns - seeing the host off the hook once more.

Chumani Butsaka came on for Moloisane before Langelihle Phili turned out from the dugout to replace a certain Cupido as the Maroons restructured their attack.

Those additions intensified the visitors who with a minute to go found the net through a clever finish by Devon Titus.

With the points secured, Stellies get their campaign in the group stages finally underway and host the Angolans at the turn of the year.
