Stellenbosch thumped by Berkane in Confed Cup

Stellenbosch FC suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to RS Berkane in their final group stage clash in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday evening.

With qualification already secured, coach Steve Barker rang the changes as Oscarine Masuluke, Omega Mdaka, Langelihle Phili, Sanele Barns and Ashley Cupido were given starts.

Berkane enjoyed a perfect start when a low ball in the area caught Masuluke in a spot of bother and ensured Oussama Lamlaoui a cool finish from point-blank range.

It didn't get any better for the visitors as the home team doubled the lead when Youssef Mehri found a yard of space in the area and tucked in a low layoff from the right-side.

Phili attempted a reply a few minutes later from a speculative drive right on the edge of the box following a loose ball, but he disappointingly fluffed his lines.

Stellies continued to push numbers in a quest to halve the deficit but lacked the accuracy to rattle the back of the net and entered halftime trailing.

The boys from the Winelands appeared renewed after the break as a telling free-kick from a tight angle by Barns hit the side-netting.

Fawaaz Basadien, Sihle Ndluli and Devon Titus stepped on from the dugout in a triple alteration by the Maroons later on in the encounter.

Berkane raced further in front midway in the second half when a perfectly weighted ball forced Masuluke to commit and left Paul Bassene to a simple finish.

The Maroons continued to chase shadows ten minutes before time as Youssef Zghoudi beat Masuluke to a delivery in the wide channels and finished from a clever angle.

Bassene piled more misery on the South Africans two minutes later after working his way out of a short free-kick to find the top corner to make it 5-0 on the night.

The heavy pasting didn't affect the Maroons participation in the rest of the tournament having qualified for the knockout stages last weekend.
