Winless start continues as Stellies fall to Moroccans

Stellenbosch's tough start to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages continued with a 3-1 defeat to RS Berkane on Sunday afternoon.

Steve Barker were able to recall Bafana Bafana international Fawaaz Basadien to the fold and added had Devon Titus who got the winner over Orlando Pirates make his 100th appearance for the club.

Though the start weren't ideal as the two-time champions surged ahead five minutes played when Zghoudi find the bottom-corner with a pin-point header from the far post.

Stellies succumbed yet again when a floated free-kick to the near side of the area by Youssef Zghoudi flew in-behind to bounced off Ismael Toure and into the net.

Berkane were in complete control before the half-hour mark and passes were never in short supply but always found their man as the counterparts lacked momentum.

Lanky forward Andre De Jong spotted a chance to have the advantage to bring them back in the contest, but unfortunately dragged well wide from the resultant effort.

Stellenbosch decided to make a change in their forward line ahead of the second half, bringing on Sanele Barns in the place of Cupido.

The Maroons were a different outfit after the break and managed to find more courage in the forward areas but the Moroccans held tight at the back.

Titus appeared more energetic in possession for the home team, thus draw a few fouls as the North Africans struggled to contain his intricate movements.

Berkane were pretty comfortable all-round and should've bagged a third with a surging attempt getting the better of Sage Stephens only to hit the upright.

However, the boys from the Botola league in the last eight minutes when a powerful effort outside the area by Reda Hajji escaped a diving Stephens and hit the net.

Stellies got a consolation five minutes later after substitute Chumani Butsaka finishing off from close-range and opened their account in the group stages.

The Maroons didn't get further clear despite attempts to do so and suffered yet another defeat in the tournament to remain bottom of Group B.
