Stellenbosch book Confed Cup quarter-final spot

Stellenbosch FC advanced to the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup from Group B with a 2-0 win over Stade Malien on Sunday afternoon.

Khomotjo Lekoloane, who opened his account against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, retained starting berth whil Ashley Cupido and Jayden Adams completed the line-up.

Andre De Jong aimed to continue his rich vein of form with a header in the opening minute off a corner-kick, but he was denied.

The action shifted to the other end and saw goalkeeper Sagae Stephens made a timeous shift to his near side to keep the West Africans making the most of an indirect set-piece scenario.

Stellies quickly regained momentum on the half-hour mark and were ahead when Fawaaz Basadien finished from the penalty spot after Devon Titus worked an indiscretion in the area.

The Malians went to the bench and refreshed their personnel six minutes apart as Hamada Cisse stepped on for Dramane Traore.

Adams doubled the lead five minutes to halftime with a towering header from the centre of the six-yard area following Basadien's corner.

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker added fresh pair of legs ahead of the resumption as one-time Richards Bay FC talisman Sanele Barns came on for Lekoloane.

Maroons maintained the momentum after settling in the second exchanges as the West Africans continued to chase shadows in a rain-soaked venue.

The Malians posed problems though with first half substitute Cisse coming inside and looked to play in Lassine Kouma, but the latter misdirected the resultant opening.

More chances came their way in a quest for a late comeback, but once more proved ineffective in the final third as the Maroons bagged the win as well as a quarter-final spot.
