Stellies book historic Confed Cup semi-final berth

Stellenbosch FC defeated reigning champions Zamalek 1-0 to advance to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals on Wednesday evening.

The Maroons were unchanged from the side that started the first-leg in Cape Town last week, where the two teams played out a goalless draw.

Steve Barker’s men had a good start to the match and threatened to take the lead through a glancing header from a tight angle by Genino Palace that sailed wide of the mark.

The White Knights did have the majority of possession in the opening stages but struggled to penetrate the low-block of the Maroons.

Stellenbosch were given a scare a little before halftime when a looping header by Seifeddine Jaziri from the centre of the box narrowly missed the near corner.

The South African outfit made a double substitution before the second half, with Lesiba Nku introduced for Devon Titus before Palace made way for Chumani Butsaka in the midfield.

Jaziri continued to be a threat to the Maroons defence and he threatened once again after the interval with a rasping attempt from the area following a counter-attack, before Nku looked to go one better through a shot from outside the box but he was denied effectively by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad.

The tempo of the match started to slow down towards the closing phases, but the intention to get the opening goal from either side remained high.

With the game heading closer to extra-time, Stellenbosch stunned the Egyptians in the final ten minutes after Sihle Ndluli fired home a low cross from Nku into the top corner.

The Maroons soaked up the late pressure and confirmed the victory as well as a spot in the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup.

Confirmed line-ups:

Zamalek: Awad, Gaver, Abdelmegeed, Shalaby, Emad, Elfetouh, Shehata, Said, Maher, Hamdy, Jaziri

Stellenbosch: Stephens, Kazie, Moloisane, Toure, Basadien, Palace, Khiba, Nduli, Titus, De Jong, Cupido
