Mario Booysen reflects on Ernst Middendorp's impact since his arrival at Kaizer Chiefs

Middendorp took the reins for a second stint at Amakhosi following the sacking of Giovanni Solinas earlier this month, after the Italian managed just seven wins in 22 matches since his arrival at the start of the season.

Chiefs had been struggling prior to the former Maritzburg United mentor’s arrival, having lost back-to-back games against Golden Arrows including a shock defeat to Zanzibarian side Zimamoto in their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round second leg.

The German, however, has since steadied the ship with three victories on the trot, beginning with a smart 1-0 win over SuperSport United before beating Elgeco Plus 6-0 over their two-legged first round tie in the continental competition.

Booysen, who has also enjoyed improved form with three consecutive clean sheets in those three matches, has lauded Middendorp’s impact and approach at the club.

“He [Middendorp] knows what he wants. He’s a very ambitious coach and knows how to keep a group together,” Booysen told his club’s website.

“We, as players, understand what the coach wants, and he will help us grow as a team.

“Middendorp has brought stability, which we can already see from the recent wins since [his] taking over.

“We play very offensive football, looking to score goals and that has helped to get results.”
