CT City send Royal AM packing with big win

Cape Town City advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout with a 3-0 victory over Royal AM on Saturday evening.

City dropped Thamsanqa Mkhize and gave a debut to Siphamandla Dondolo while Amadou Soukouna was also restored in the attack.

Both teams didn't display an extensive amount of pressure, with the overall play extremely tight and limited forays penetrated either side.

City did come close well ahead of the half-hour mark through a first-time effort by Darwin Gonzalez following a floated cross, but Xolani Ngcobo palmed for a corner.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Haashim Domingo should've put the Citizens ahead a few minutes later from a delivery on the right, but he tucked way over the top.

The probing didn't stop though for the host who took the lead when youngster Dondolo sneaked in on the blind-side and cutback for Soukouna to tap in on the brink of halftime.

Eric Tinkler's men remained in control post the interval and got a second goal after Jaedin Rhodes controlled expertly on the edge of the area and curled in the top corner.

Tinkler then made his first substitution a while later which saw Kayden Francis fill in ahead of a certain Domingo.

Royal AM lacked intensity to orchestrate a comeback as the Citizens enjoyed complete dominance through a succession of forward penetrations.

South African youth international Jody Ah Shene grabbed the third goal the last 12 minutes with a superb first-touch finish from clever play amongst other scenarios.

The Citizens remained in control all around and in the end walked away with a comprehensive victory as well as quarter-final spot.
