Stellenbosch booked their spot in the quarter-finals if the Carling Knockout with a 2-1 win over Chippa United on Saturday afternoon.
Chippa made three changes following their draw against Moroka Swallows before the FIFA break, as goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua and Siphelele Luthuli were recalled, along with debutant Andile Fakude.
Stellies, meanwhile, were boosted by the return of Iqraam Rayners, as the only change from their thumping win over TS Galaxy.
The sides went out in rainy conditions and after settling in, the visitors came the closest to going ahead on 19 minutes after Devon Titus' shot in the box was smothered by Kazapua.
Steve Barker's charges gained momentum as Rayners had a chance on 24 minutes with a header in the box that was saved by the Namibian.
The Chilli Boys only started to get into the game towards the end of the first stanza but they could not create clear opportunities, as the sides went to the break deadlocked.
However, the Cape Winelands outfit had a perfect start in the second stanza, as Andre de Jong broke the deadlock three minutes later with a strike from a rebound in the box.
Stellenbosch remained on the front foot and former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota doubled their lead just before the hour-mark with a strike in the box after he was teed up by Rayners.
Morgan Mammila's men eventually reduced the deficit on 64 minutes thanks to a free-kick by Menzi Ndwandwe that found the top corner.
Barker made a double tactical change with 13 minutes to go, as he crowded the midfield with the introduction of Nhlanhla Mgaga and Antonio Van Wyk, who both came on for De Jong and Van Wyk.
The game stretched from end to end in the dying minutes, with United threatening to force the game to extra-time and Stellies coming close to killing off the match and in the end it was the Maroons who booked their spot in the quarter-finals.
