Five-star Sundowns cruise to Carling Knockout last 8

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their spot in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals with a 5-0 thrashing of Golden Arrows on Saturday evening.

Masandawana were without star player Themba Zwane as Lebohang Maboe was given a start, while they named Bafana duo Khuliso Mudau and Teboho Mokoena on the bench.

The home side hit the ground running after the opening quarter through a tremendous finish from Thapelo Morena that got the better of goalkeeper Edward Maova.

The situation unsettled Abafana Besthende a great deal who urgently attempted a come back through Nduduzo Sibiya and Sfiso Cele, but neither proved decisive.

Sundowns made the most of their dominance and got a second on the half-hour mark where unselfish play from Tashreeq Matthews let Iqraam Rayners take aim to double the lead.

The visiting outfit were required to make a substitution ten minutes ahead of halftime after Ryan Moon sustained an injury and saw Lungelo Nguse take his place.

A trio of substitutions ahead of the resumption saw Knox Mutizwa, Velemseni Ndwandwe and Nqubeko Dlamini come onto the field of play for the visitors/

Matthews went close to adding a third barely a minute from the break with a potent header from a delivery, but he was denied by Maova, while Mutizwa went close at the other end moments later through a surging free-kick that forced Ronwen Williams into a good save.

Masandawana continued enjoying all the dominance and grabbed a third goal inside the last 20 minutes when the returning Mothobi Mvala headed in a corner from Thembinkosi Lorch.

Namibian ace Peter Shalulile joined in on the act minutes thereafter with a smart finish that left a certain Maova in his wake, getting his first goal of the season.

The troubled continued brewing for the visiting team who conceded a fifth goal late on through development graduate Kutlwano Letlhaku, as  Masandawana emerged comfortable victors in the end and advanced to the quarter-finals.
