Richards Bay pip Sekhukhune in Carling Knockout

Richards Bay FC became the final team to advance to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals after defeating Sekhukhune United 1-0 Sunday evening.

The visitors gave a start to Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Sipho Mbule in midfield, while the Natal Rich Boyz included both Somalia Ntsundwana and Yanele Mbuthuma from the start.

Sekhukhune hold a good record against Richards Bay coming into the clash, with two wins and a draw in their last three encounters while Brandon Truter's charges are winless in their last three encounters.

The opening stages of the first half proved to be quite a cagey affair, as neither side were able to create any serious opening in the final third.

After a cagey start, the opening goal arrived in the 39th minute via the boot of Lwandile Mabuya, who found the back of the net via a free-kick that took a deflection and sailed in off the post for his first goal of the campaign.

Sekhukhune coach Chibuike Ohizu responded with a few changes after the interval, with Chibuike Ohizu, Linda Mntambo and former Orlando Pirates midfielder Lesedi Kapinga introduced in the attack.

The second half was all Sekhukhune as they went in search of an equaliser, but the Natal Rich Boys managed to stifle every threat in the final third as time began to wind down.

Brandon Truter's charges were able to see out the closing stages of the second half to deny Sekhukhune a goal, as they move on to the next round and end their three-game winless run.
