VERDICT | Did Sundowns beat Chiefs fair and square?

Renowned former FIFA referee Victor Hlungwani has provided clarity on the penalty incident involving Njabulo Blom and Peter Shalulile's controversial goal during Mamelodi Sundowns' 4-0 Carling Knockout victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs were comprehensively defeated by a rampant Sundowns side at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday, with Iqraam Rayners (brace) Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau all getting on the score sheet.

Sections of the Khosi Nations have since voiced some concerns over the officiating on the day, particularly the opening goal in which Blom was adjudged to have fouled Lucas Ribeiro Costa inside the box.

There were also groans and murmurs of discontent about Shalulile's strike, wherein the Namibian appeared to be in an offside position when receiving the pass.

Reviewing the match on SABC Sport's Monday night show SoccerZone, Hlungwani revealed that match officials were spot on during the encounter.

"If you are behind, my friend, Blom, whatever you do is the infringement of the Laws of the Game," said Hlungwani, reviewing the penalty incident.

"You can see that he starts with the knee and also got him (Ribeiro) on the ground there. So, here is the correct decision by Luxolo Badi to give a penalty."

On the third goal, Hlungwani noted: "Shalulile scored a goal and people are saying he was offside. The law says a player cannot be offside if he is behind the ball or there is an opponent close by.

"If you look at it closely here, you can see that Shalulile is behind the ball. So, the correct decision by Zakhele Siwela not to raise his flag, because the player is behind the ball. It complies with the Laws of the Game."
