Nabi in pace up challenge at Chiefs

With the opening tenth of the Betway Premiership season gone, Nasreddine Nabi will enter the second tenth aiming to keep pace with what is happening at the top instead of mid-table.

Nabi has grown accustomed to challenging for the league based on what has happened in his last two jobs over the last three years.

Twice, he was a league winner with Young Africans in Tanzania, before losing out on the title by a single point at FAR Rabat in Morocco last season.

So, what happens at the top is what he has become familiar with and is what will be the destination that he desires through being the driver at Chiefs.

Their biggest rivals – Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns – have already made no secret of their intentions this season by collecting all 12 points in setting the pace.

Having been down in the dumps, the Naturena-based outfit will be shy to raise their hands with confidence in matters relating to lifting the league this term.

However, they wouldn't want to stay too far away from the pacesetters just in case circumstances swing to their favour along the way in this marathon and their massive fan base keeps providing the push.

Keeping pace means Chiefs need to keep the distance between themselves and the pair of Pirates and Sundowns as thin as possible instead of leaving it to keep on widening.

Amakhosi already sit six points behind the joint leaders, though they have a game in hand, which is no guarantee of points in the bag.

This leaves the game against SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday (17:30) hanging as a must-win, otherwise they could be nine points behind if Pirates and Sundowns both win.

The seventh position that the Soweto giants occupy for now – regardless of how early it is into the season – is not where they would want to finish at the end of the campaign and Nabi knows it.

"We are happy that the fans are happy with the results, but we are still far away from where we want to be," says Nabi.

"We are in a period of building, and it will take a lot of time, but even in that period of building we need to get the results to keep the club going forward.

"We are aware of the fact that in the future it might happen that we go through difficult moments, but we know our strategy and how we want our team to play, and we hope the support will still be there.

"This season is a period of transition from one step to another step.

"There will be difficult steps, but we take one game at a time, and we will do everything to make the supporters happy and get a positive result in every game we play," says Nabi.
