EXPLAINED: Why Ranga was booed

In this edition of Supporters Forum, Kaizer Chiefs supporter Thulani Ngcobo reveals the reason the club's supporters booed Ranga Chivaviro in the recent Carling Knockout match against SuperSport United.

Chivaviro is the latest victim of the Boo Boys brigade after he missed two sitters against Matsatsantsa in last Saturday's Carling Knockout round of 16 victory.

He managed to score the third goal as Amakhosi ran out 4-0 winners.

Ngcobo has advised the bulky striker to refrain from making gestures towards his own side's supporters after scoring a goal.

"It's very wrong for our supporters to boo our players because for them to perform, they need our support. We need to play our role as the 12th player," says the man who has supported the Soweto giants since 1987.

"However, players also need to understand that not every Kaizer Chiefs supporter will love them. As Chiefs and [Orlando] Pirates supporters, when you join us as a striker, we expect you to score goals, and a defender must make sure he defends.

"But if you play three games [and are] not delivering, the fans get frustrated. But what I don't condone is supporters booing their players.

"Ranga has been missing 20 chances and scored only one. After that, he celebrates his goal by 'silencing' the supporters with gestures. You must silence us with goals, not with gestures.

"He needs to understand that no matter how the fans are, you never respond to them because they are there forever, whereas you are only there for a three-year contract," continues Ngcobo.

The prominent supporter says players need to build a good relationship with the fans, and that the former Marumo Gallants man was only booed for missing sitters.

"I remember in previous games he missed a chance and the fans were not happy, and then the very same game he happened to score, and guess what? He made some gesture towards the supporters.

"So, on Saturday at Peter Mokaba Stadium, the supporters were responding to what he did previously.

"What he needs is to score goals. He must be very lucky to have a coach who believes in him. he must not disappoint the coach. I advise him to stop fighting with the supporters because that's a battle he will never win."

Chiefs are back in action against SuperSport on Saturday, this time in the league.
