Hats off for Amakhosi's 'induna'

With voices ringing loud in Hugo Broos' ear about the need to include Thabo Cele in the national set-up, a former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has stood up to declare him the club's best signing this season.

Cele has left an impression since marking his return to South Africa in the Soweto Derby on February 1, where Chiefs lost 1-0 to bitter rivals Orlando Pirates.

Born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, he left South Africa at the age of 19 to join Real SC in Portugal, and was snapped by the Naturena-based outfit after a stint at Russian Premier League side Fakel Voronezh.

"I actually know the boy, and yes, he has impressed me since joining," says Sandile Zuke.

"It's amazing how well he has fitted in, in such a short time. Since he arrived, he has been doing very well. He has added stability to the Chiefs team. He is a proper defensive midfielder.

"Playing for Chiefs, you are always expected to hit the ground running, so if you don't do that, it becomes difficult. Cele has brought security to the back four, and people can definitely expect more from him.

"He is still young, and he can only build on his performances. For me, he is Chiefs' best signing this season," he went on.

On Sunday, the Glamour Boys visit fellow strugglers Richards Bay FC at King Zwelithini Stadium (15:30).

"These are two teams desperate for points. Richards Bay also want to move out of the relegation zone, so I expect an interesting and competitive match."

Zuke also pointed out where Nasreddine Nabi's charges have been falling short this season.

"There's a new coach, and it usually takes time for players to understand what he wants from the team. I don't think they can still win the league. They should focus on fighting for a Top Eight spot and try to win the Nedbank Cup for their supporters.

"Rebuilding a team is a process, and at the moment, a foundation is being laid."
