Chiefs falter, Gallants goal under the microscope

A refereeing expert has settled the debate over Marumo Gallants' winning goal against Kaizer Chiefs, with suggestions of a possible offside.

Chiefs suffered a sobering 2-1 defeat to Gallants at FNB Stadium on Saturday .

Glody Lilepo had opened the scoring just 10 minutes in, before Matome Mathiane and Daniel Msendami put the visitors ahead in the second half.

However, a debate around the latter's goal has dominated the post-match conversations around the game, with sections of supporters arguing that Phathutshedzo Nange, who attempted to head the ball before it went in, may have obstructed goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma's view.

Reviewing the match on SABC Sport's SoccerZone on Monday evening, Victor Hlungwani explained why the goal should have been disallowed.

"We will see Phathutshedzo heading or trying to head the ball," said the former PSL referee.

"What does the law say? It says [the goal is offside if a player is] making an obvious action. If you look at it, you will see that he is in an offside position. You can see his leg is in an offside position [when the ball is played].

"So now, when the ball is played, the assistant referees are advised to wait and see if he interferes or involves himself in actual play.

"So, let's see what he does from an offside position. He jumps and when he jumps, he is now making an obvious action that disturbs Bvuma from playing the ball.

"Therefore, that is an offside, an incorrect decision was made," added Hlungwani.

His verdict, however, will offer little comfort to an Amakhosi side that has slipped down to ninth on the standings with three matches left.

The results place further scrutiny on head coach Nasreddine Nabi, whose side face rivals Orlando Pirates on Saturday in a crucial Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
