Wheels of change to turn at Chiefs?

If head coach Nasreddine Nabi's last line-up and recent comments are anything to go by, there could be several major changes to Kaizer Chiefs' regular starting XI come the next match.

Chiefs beat Richards Bay 2-1 at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, a result that propelled them back into the the Top Eight of the Betway Premiership standings.

However, the significance of the match could be found in the details.

Although partly forced by injuries and suspensions, Nabi opted for a new-look line-up that saw several changes that could play an integral part in how the team shapes up for the rest of the season.

Most notably, Sibongiseni Mthethwa got his first appearance of the campaign and put in an impressive shift that would have earned him the Man of the Match award were it not for an equally deserving Yusuf Maart, who contributed to both of Amakhosi's goals.

'Ox' had been at the edge of his lifespan at Chiefs, with the club having made attempts to sell him before the start of the new season.

However, after Wednesday's encounter, Nabi was so impressed that he labelled the 30-year-old's performance as 'unbelievable'.

The destroyer could be set for an even bigger role for the rest of 2024/25 as Edson Castillo remains sidelined due to injury for the next few months.

Secondly, a suspension to Inacio Miguel saw Given Msimango return to the starting XI to pair up against new signing and ever-present Rushwin Dortley.

The two paired well together and kept Richards bay relatively quiet despite a lapse of concentration allowing a late goal.

Nabi still labelled the display from the duo as 'way way better'.

"It's true that we concede goals, but today (Wednesday) considering the circumstances, playing for 46 minutes one man down, it was difficult to keep the clean sheet.

"Even though we think our defensive structure was way, way better today, it was difficult to keep a clean sheet with a man down," the Tunisian-Belgian noted.

The two centre-backs will most likely start once more when the Soweto giants take on Royal AM on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Brandon Petersen also impressed in goal in his first competitive appearance of the season, as did Pule Mmodi on the wing.

These changes could all greatly influence how the side look for the remainder of the campaign and could spell trouble for the players now on the periphery.
