Exclusive: Agent opens up on Williams' Downs long-term deal

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams' representative Matthew Moore has opened up on the Bafana Bafana number one extending his stay at the club for another five years.

A month prior to Williams being crowned 2023/24 PSL Footballer of the Season, Sundowns announced that they had agreed a four-year contract extension with the 32-year-old, with a one year option to renew, a deal that would keep him at the club at least until 2028, on paper.

The club captain showed why he is the reigning Footballer of the Season after his blinding saves against Kaizer Chiefs, in a pulsating Betway Premiership encounter on Saturday, earned the Tshwane giants a narrow victory and extended their winning start to the season.

After Williams' Man of the Match display on Saturday, Kickoff caught up, exclusively, with his agent Moore, who emphasized the Bafana captain's status in the PSL.

"I think he's the best player [in the PSL]. Last season, he was the best and rightly won the PSL Footballer of the Season, but even the season before when he didn't win, I think he deserved it ," Moore told this website.

"You saw against Chiefs, if it was any other goalkeeper, Sundowns would have lost that game. He is as important to the team as a striker, his saves equal wins. The past two seasons he has been fantastic, you can see he's the leader, for club and country.

"And most importantly, he's an outstanding professional. He takes his career seriously and he's an example to a lot of the young players," added Moore.

As one of the best players in the country and especially after his heroics at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations for the national team, there were expectations for the Gqeberha-born star to move abroad, with a long-term contract extension at Sundowns in May this year coming as somewhat of a surprise.

However, Moore explained what influenced the long-term contract extension with the Chloorkop-based outfit, alluding that it does not limit his chances of moving overseas.

"Obviously, Sundowns are an ambitious club, especially with the [FIFA] Club World Cup coming up next June-July, I think it's important for them to have their strongest team out there, obviously that includes Ronwen.

"I believe Ronwen can build on this season, he can go to the Club World Cup and after that we will see what happens."

The former SuperSport United man has been nominated for the prestigious Yashin Trophy [Goalkeeper of the Year] at the Ballon d'Or awards, the first Africa-based shot-stopper to earn such a nomination.
