Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter happy to accept advice from PSL colleagues

In a show of support and solidarity, Mosimane dedicated Mamelodi Sundowns’ 4-0 thrashing of Libyan outfit Al-Ahli Benghazi in the CAF Champions League group stage decider in December to Bafana, ahead of their decisive 2019 AFCON qualifier against The Mediterranean Knights in March.

Baxter’s charges are tasked with getting at least a point against the North African side in order to maintain second spot in Group E and seal their places at the tournament finals in Egypt alongside Nigeria, who qualified with a goalless draw in South Africa in November.

Asked whether he will be seeking any advice on the clash from ‘Jingles’, the British tactician said he regularly chats to all PSL coaches including Mosimane but feels it needless to gain intel specifically over this matter.

“I talk to all the coaches – I don’t think there’s any prestige in that. I talk to Pitso, we discuss all aspects of African and South African football,” said Baxter.

“I don’t need to seek just Pitso, Gavin [Hunt] or Steve Komphela’s advise on how they would do this [for the Libya game], we discuss all aspects of that and there’s always something there that [I can pick out].

“As a national team coach, I’m not some sort of instructive for the other coaches – we’re coaches, and colleagues and we discuss football.

“I’ve got no secrets. People [coaches] call and ask, ‘Can I come and watch your training?’ And I say, ‘Of course you can’ – why? Because we’re colleagues, and there are no secrets."

Baxter also argued that there are no new secrets on how to win football matches.

“What’s winning football games now has been winning football games for 50 years. When Clive Barker [ex-Bafana coach] had the team, I can guarantee you that the same things were winning games then – perhaps in a different way, with a different style, but the same things were winning games," he added.

“There’s no prestige in that, and I have a good relationship with other coaches. It’s natural for me to talk to other coaches, and certainly between now and the game I will be talking to most of the coaches.”
