In our exciting feature How I Became a Goalkeeper, former Mamelodi Sundowns, Arcadia Shepherds, and Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Mark Anderson reveals how he ended up between the goals.
"I just started diving around in a playground in Pretoria when I was five-years-old, you know.
"When I got to school in Grade 1, we used to play in the morning with a tennis ball, and I just started diving around there in the goals like a crazy guy.
"What followed is, I went to the Arcadia Shepherds set-up, in the old league in those days Arcadia were playing in a professional league, and they had a junior section.
"As a 10-year-old I got into my bicycle, and I went for trials there. They were having trials at Caledonian Stadium on a Saturday morning, and then I made the team. That's how it started."
Who are some of the goalkeepers you looked up to?
"Micky Hayward and Trevor Gething, both from Arcadia Shepherds.

"When I became 17, he became our goalkeeper coach Trevor Gething. I and Deshi Bhaktawer were training together from about 15, 16, and 17 years old.
"Trevor was a forceful, aggressive you know. I modelled my game to him; he was very focused. He was never smiling he was just focused on what he was doing and telling defenders what to do."
Who are some of the goalkeepers today who are your favourites?
"At home, it's become quite difficult, for the last 10 years it's been Dennis Onyango from Mamelodi Sundowns. He was just way above everybody.
"And now it's Ronwen Williams, his style of play reminds me of Andre Arendse. Very cool and calm under pressure."
