Komphela puts ‘cream top-up’ on Ribeiro Costa

Lucas Ribeiro Costa's goal on Wednesday for Mamelodi Sundowns has been described as the type which should push domestic football to keep him in the league.

Ribeiro Costa struck what is a rare goal, connecting his foot while on the run, off an incredible assist from Khuliso Mudau.

To say it was a beauty is an understatement.

"It is good to have the PSL with good quality players," pointed out Komphela when asked about the Brazilian who stands no chance of ever playing for his national team.

Ribeiro has nine goal contributions this season in 10 appearances having reached 25 goals/assists in his first season.

"If Ribeiro is the kind of player that we say just before he goes somewhere else, we say 'can we do some partnership to secure this guy for the prestige and the level of the league'.

"In terms of the finishing, he made it seem so easy, but that connection is one of the most difficult.

"The most difficult is connecting a square pass because timing has to be perfect.

"Maybe the benefit is that the ball came across from his right shoulder and then he connected with the left foot, which then gives him the leverage to swing and come opposite the trajectory of the ball.

"Then it becomes a hell of a beautiful goal.

"I don't know how many keepers, only unless you are in the radar of the strike, and you raise your arm and touch the ball.

"But the speed of the ball was insane inside the box.

"Credit to Peter (Shalulile) for dragging the defender to the near and compliment (Khuliso) Mudau for making a pass and not a cross because most of the time players just cross inside the box without any target.

"The weight of the pass makes these guys geniuses who think with their feet.

"Footballers do this amidst the chaos of action and all that and we still disrespect these people.

"Those are mathematicians because they are precise and accurate, which they train.

"But at the end of the day, after you have put all the ingredients, the one who enjoys the soup simply says the soup was nice," says Komphela.
