'We scored four but...' - Mngqithi critical of Downs' big win

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi was critical of the side's 4-1 win over Marumo Gallants on Tuesday evening.

Sundowns maintained their winning start in the Betway Premiership after drubbing Marumo Gallants 4-1 courtesy of goals by Tashreeq Matthews, Iqraam Rayners, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Sphelele Mkhulise.

However, Mngqithi says he feels they could have scored more and was upset they could not keep a clean-sheet.

"We scored four but I feel hard done by because I think we should have scored more than four, we messed around. Marcelo [Allende] had two big chances, Peter was unfortunate, we created quite a lot of situations that could have resulted [into goals]," Mngqithi said on SuperSport TV.

"But overall I'm happy because my wish is to try to create as many chances as possible and to play according to the situation. If we have to build-up slowly we build-up slowly but if we have to faster, we're faster to create openings and I think the boys are responding.

"I was not happy at all with the last 20 minutes of the game but sometimes when you make so many changes it is bound to happen but I was not happy with how we exerted ourselves in the last ten [minutes]. The goal we conceded makes me feel like we've lost the match, you know," Mngqithi said.

The 53-year-old coach also touched on their transition game, using the speed of Rayners.

"Those transition moments were very good in terms of the speed to try to get behind the defence when possibilities are there but I also think there were good moments when Lucas comes short into the hole and he plays into that space," Mngqithi went on.

"The goal we got where Iqraam came short, he found Thapelo [Morena] behind, those situations are always impressive for me."

Sundowns captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams gave Shalulile the armband after the Namibian came on off the bench late in the game and Mngqithi revealed that it was a gesture to motivate the 30-year-old striker, who is yet to score this season.

"It's very interesting when you see the mentality among the group, the will-power to work as a collective, which is very important for all of us to keep that culture," the former Golden Arrows mentor went on.

"Ronwen is a leader, you can see that and he wants to pick Peter up. We're trying our level best to make sure that we don't lose Peter because he's gonna be very important for us.

"And we're waiting for that moment where he just gets one and we're hopeful that moment will come soon," Mngqithi added.
