Cardoso: Sundowns has a very strong team spirit

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says the team spirit was key to their late 1-0 win over AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday.

Furthermore, Masandawana continue to hold a three-point gap at the top of the table over second-place Orlando Pirates with Iqraam Rayners netting the winner.

Sundowns were down to ten players as goalkeeper Ronwen Williams got a red-card for handling outside the box and seen celebrating on the field post-match.

"Obviously, I think we have a very strong team spirit and I always tell them when one falls, the other one must get up. So, Ronwen is a very important player for us not only by the men he is but the quality of goalkeeper he is," Cardoso told SuperSport TV.

"I don't have an idea on the action whatever it's not important, the importance is that the others stood for him and I wanted him to feel the energy not only on my behalf but from the group – the solidarity basically it was his joy to share with him he deserves (it)," he continued.

With the half goalless, a double substitution by the Brazilians at halftime saw Kutlwano Letlhaku and Bathusi Aubaas come on to inject speed in the overall play.

"I think first half we played too slow that's why I said to the lads inside we need to speed up the game that's why we also changed two players at halftime. One, two players to speed up the game so that we could wake up a little bit.

"Then, suddenly we lost one player and everything changes, we tried to manage the game there was a moment I could speak to the players bring them on the bench, organise them and tell them we'll have our chances because we have the quality players that can create.

"We would have the patience to arrive there and be in the right moment and try to score. It's a pity we didn't make the result earlier, we had so many chances but it's wonderful to win such a game after the suffer, it's normal," Cardozo said.

"We just tried to bring energy with players that can because they close very well in the 4-1-4-1, they tried to close our middle we needed individual players that can in terms of capacity, quality, technical quality makes the difference.

"He (Kodisang) is a young player obviously; he needs some more experience but we are providing him the opportunity but we had more. Obviously, we are happy with the performance, Peter (Shalulile) did vey well, Aubaas did very well.

"We gather the will to get the result, God protect us and we got it so now I would like to wish everyone back home a happy Christmas eve, our families in Portugal because we won't be with them.

"We know the statistics; we know until that moment we weren't strong on set-pieces. Obviously, we know we can get better, we need more time to work more,."
