My Muti Story - Joel Masilela

In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from Mamelodi Sundowns legend Joel "Fire" Masilela.

Who and where?

"Most people don't believe muti does exist in football. And it works.

"I saw it with my own eyes when we played Kaizer Chiefs in the Rothmans Cup final at FNB Stadium. We all know what happened that day.

"The whole thing started in the dressing rooms. Kick-Off was at 15:00, we left the hotel in Boksburg at 12 O'clock.

"When we arrived at the Stadium the Kaizer Chiefs security personnel stopped us from going to the dressing room.

They pointed us to other dressing rooms we were not used to. Not the dressing room that was allocated to us.

"When me and Mambush [Daniel Mudau] went to check the dressing room Chiefs wanted us to use, we discovered that it was full of smoke, someone had burned some muti, there was water on the floor, you'd be forgotten to think it was a swimming pool. There was a bad smell. Our security Joe, may his soul rest in peace, advised us not to go in.

"I went back to the bus to explain the situation to our coach the late Ted Dumitru and Peter Koutrollis. We ended up using our bus as a dressing room."

Why were you doing it?

"We didn't want to be harmed by the Chiefs muti, so the bus was a safer alternative."

Who was the muti man?

"Our muti man was Bra Jeff from Mamelodi East. He is the one who instructed our security Joe not to allow us to use the smelly dressing room."

What stood out for you?

"After our warm-up, we were taken to a different dressing room where we found our muti man and Kaizer Chiefs muti man fighting. Punches were flying. There were guns...that made me realise how serious that match was."

What was the result?

"We were robbed in that 1998 Rothmans Cup final, remember my second goal was wrongfully ruled off-side. So, the match ended with a 2-2 score line, and we lost on penalty shoot-outs.

"I took one of the penalties but I missed because of the tension. Lovers [Mohlala] also missed. Themba [Mnguni] missed. And Kaizer Chiefs won."
