Story Behind My Nickname - Roger "General" Feutmba

In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with a former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder on the origin of his nickname "General".

Who and where did he play?

"Roger Feutmba is a Mamelodi Sundowns and Cameroon International, a "General" who commanded with his left foot in the middle of the park."

What's your nickname:

"General"

Who gave it to you and why?

"I believe it came from the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters and was popularised by the media.

"Remember I played football wholeheartedly, I loved playing football, I was very involved.

"I believe I was nicknamed 'General' because of the way I was playing.

"Because of what I was doing as a playmaker, controlling the team, dictating the tempo of the game.

"In football, that makes you a General, a person who controls the pitch."

1998/99 - Roger Feutmba (Cameroon)

Did you like it?

"Ya, I did."

Is there anyone that didn't use it?

"All my teammates at Sundowns called me General. Though the likes of Daniel Mudau would sometimes create some names just to tease you.

"They said when I was chewing a chewing gum my head would start shaking.

"Some of my teammates would call me General when they need something (laughs).

"But up to today most of them still call me General.

Roger Feutmba was the Downs 'General'.

If you relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

"In Cameroon, they used to call me 'Computer' or 'ordinateur' in French.

"A player who is organising everything for everyone. A player who always comes up with a solution.

"But I appreciate the nickname the South African football fans gave me.

"I appreciate both my nicknames because they resemble something great, something that is excellent.

"Today you can't do a lot without the computer."
