Daniels: What relegated Cape Town Spurs

Former Cape Town Spurs captain Clayton 'Hare' Daniels has opened up about the factors that contributed to the club's relegation last season.

The Urban Warriors spent only one season in South Africa's top tier and are now competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Daniels believes that the lack of support from the club was a major reason for their struggles in the early part of the season. Coach Shaun Bartlett had to work with a limited squad.

"We were set up for failure from day one," Daniels tells KickOff.

"Remember, we won the promotional play-offs, but when we moved up to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), we did so with a very young team that included a few experienced players.

"However, we were fatigued from the previous season of fighting for promotion, and the club did not provide the necessary resources for Coach Shaun Bartlett. They expected him to compete with the same tired team at the PSL level.

"As we all know, once you start poorly in the PSL, like we did in the first eight to ten games, it's always going to be a struggle.

"Why did they allow Ernst Middendorp to bring in new players when it was already too late? Why didn't they extend the same courtesy to Coach Bartlett from the beginning of the season to rejuvenate his squad?"

Currently, the team coached by Ernst Middendorp is also struggling in the second tier, sitting in 13th place out of 16 teams with only nine points from ten matches.

They are just one point ahead of bottom-placed Venda FC, who have eight points after the same number of games.

Spurs' next league match is against fellow strugglers Baroka FC at Athlone Stadium on November 22, 2024.
