How I became a goalkeeper: King Ndlovu

In our exciting feature How I Became A Goalkeeper, KickOff speaks to current Marumo Gallants shot-stopper, King Ndlovu.

Like most goalkeepers, Ndlovu ended up between the sticks by chance.

I'm sure you have an interesting story to tell about how you became a goalkeeper.

"I still remember very well we were from an under-15 tournament and I didn't play.

So in our next game, one grootman said to me, go try your luck in goals. Our usual goalkeeper didn't pitch up on that day.

"I've always been a humble person, so I didn't take it in a bad way, I just obliged not knowing it was something that was going to change my life.

"Before that I was a top striker, scoring goals in every match.

"I kept goals for a Vodacom League team while I was in Grade 11. I will forever be grateful to Bra Sinky Mnisi for discovering me. He gave me my first professional contract."

Who are some of the goalkeepers you grew up following?

"Remember I was a ball boy at SuperSport United. So I used to watch Denis Onyango a lot. That's why me and him we have the same goalkeeping style.

Who are some of the goalkeepers who are your favorites?

"These days it's tough to single out any particular goalkeeper in the PSL.

"But I must say Ronwen Williams is doing better than most in terms of ball playing. He is the most comfortable we have.

"There's also that guy from Rwanda who is at TS Galaxy, he is not bad. I'm not saying he is my favourite, I'm saying he is doing well. He is not a bad goalkeeper.

"There's also Sage Stephens from Stellenbosch FC. He is not doing bad at all."
