In this edition of Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff catches up with Marumo Gallants goalkeeper King "Katara" Ndlovu.
Ndlovu also played for Black Leopards, Maritzburg United, and Jomo Cosmos.
What's your nickname?
"They call me Katara, meaning a guitar in Setswana."
Who gave it to you and why?
"This nickname was given to me by some coach at Black Leopards, he was from Belgium, and he coached us in the 2020/21 Season, I just can't remember his name [Patrick Aussems].
"We were at a practice playing small-sided games and so on, and that day I was playing inside.
"Even though I was already a goalkeeper the coach liked the way I was playing as an outfield player.
"So every time I had the ball he screamed Chitara! Chitara! [Guitarra] it means guitar in Spanish.
"When my teammates asked him what was the meaning of guitarra he said it meant guitar, apparently I was playing so nice I reminded him of his guitar."
Did you like it?
"Yes, I did because I like house music and it's also called Katara."
Anyone that didn't use it?
"Everybody calls me that, even now I'm known as Katara."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"I think I'm doing just fine with Katara, it suits me in a way that even though I'm a goalkeeper I can still use my feet.
"It means I play nice like a katara. It's a nice tune, ingom' emnandi."
