Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker Siyabonga Nomvete backs the Bucs for MTN8 glory

‘Bhele’, who enjoyed stints with both Soweto giants, feels that last year’s runners-up have the slight edge over their arch-rivals.

"It is tough to call but I think Orlando Pirates [will win], I see them as favourites to win the MTN8 final,” Nomvete predicts.

"With that said, and with the way they are playing, it is tough to call because even Kaizer Chiefs has the chance to win it. But when two great football clubs play together, nobody wants to lose. But there has to be someone who will win, and that is Orlando Pirates.

“It will be a great game that will be exciting and the world will be watching."

The Dube Birds striker added that it was a privilege to play for both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

"It means a lot you know,” says the 36-year-old. “When smaller teams take on either Pirates or Chiefs, the players are always thinking at the back of their minds: ‘My performance has to be on top and there is no two ways about it.’ Everybody wants to perform and everybody wants to play and win that game.

"It's a huge motivations [playing for both sides] because nobody has said 'I don't want to play for Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates', " the veteran forward adds.

Nomvete feels that playing for either Soweto club can only lead to bigger things in future.

"It is a wish for any player with the way things happens inside and out,” he says. “Once you’re there as a player, it is a great motivator to all players who up and coming.

“You play for these teams because you want to go to Europe, and when you’re playing for a big team, you always look at that as a launch-pad to go to Europe and also look at it as a stepping stone to play for the national team."
