Masilela: MTN8 final needed VAR

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Joel "Fire" Masilela says VAR was needed in Saturday's MTN8 final that was won by defending champions Orlando Pirates.

Masilela says referee mistakes will continue until VAR is introduced in local football.

"The level of our referees is not up to standard," Masilela tells KickOff.

"I'm not going to mention names or point people out, as long as we don't get our boardroom right, it will remain a challenge.

"The only thing that can save our problem is VAR. That's all we need to do.

"Whether it's a big game or small game, we need to do things right.

"I know VAR is costly, but it's going to minimise those smaller errors.

"Watching a football match these days, you know from the word go there will be an error from the referee.

"I don't condone that; I just want to see a beautiful game of football from both teams.

"I know it's possible for us to have an incident-free game, whenever Sundowns meets Pirates it's always an open game, no one parking the bus."
