Historic MTN8 final on the cards?

The MTN8 final could turn into a historic occurrence in matters relating to the Big Three should Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns manage to get past their semi-final hurdles.

Pirates must negotiate their way past Cape Town City over two legs this month to reach the final, while Sundowns will have to do the same against Stellenbosch.

Never in the history of this competition have any two of the Big Three – Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns – met in the final for two years in a row.

Chiefs and Pirates played in the first ever final back in 1972 but only met again two years later.

It was until 1992 that another final involving two of the Big Three was played when Chiefs overcame Sundowns.

Amakhosi got the better of The Brazilians again two years later and again in 2001.

Sundowns were then winners against Pirates in 2007, before they again surrendered to Chiefs the following year.

The Buccaneers won against Chiefs in 2011, before the pendulum swung the other way in 2014.

Last year, Pirates lifted the MTN8 after getting past Sundowns on penalties and the two will have another chance to do it again this year if they get into the final.

The levels of interest will be higher with the two in the final more than it will be should the decider pit any other pairing which doesn't feature both.

Pirates – now sailing in calm waters under Jose Riveiro – will be aiming to become the first club to lift this trophy three years in a row.

Not even Chiefs have been able to lift the Top 8 trophy three years in a row despite all the success they have enjoyed, which mostly came in the pre-PSL era years when they won 11 of their 15 titles.

MTN8 have upped the winners' purse to R10 million (from R8 million) this year, with the rest of the teams getting R1 million (up from R800 000).
