Masango is aiming to punish his old man by making him wash his car if AmaKhosi wins the MTN8 Final against Pirates on Saturday night.
Though Mandla earns a living at Chiefs his father Amos remains a die-hard Bucs fan up to this day and with the biggest football fixture being played this weekend again, banter has been the order of the day in the Masango household this week.
“There is always war in the week leading to the Derby because most of my friends are Orlando Pirates supporters and even my dad is an Orlando Pirates supporter,” says Masango, who supported Chiefs from his time as a kid in Kwaggafontein and Kriel in Mpumalanga.
“However, whenever there is a Derby he (father) always says blood is thicker than water so you can read in between the lines about what all this means. Actually my dad and my friends always give me that motivation factor because not only am I up against Orlando Pirates on the field but I am also against Pirates at home against my dad and my friends.
“When they make noise I always tell them that I at least have the power to influence the match so it is going to be interesting,” he says.
And what then happens on the day after the Soweto Derby?
“If we (Chiefs) win I have to punish him (dad) by making him wash my car or my takkies. If they win I do the same and I actually even go the extra mile of driving him around to wherever he wants to go. I am planning to get him to wash my car on Sunday (laughing),” says Masango.
The 25-year-old says that despite this game holding so much significance in his personal space, the drive to win it remains the same as in any other fixture, adding that his time in the national team recently has been positive in improving his game.
“I take this game as if we are playing Ajax Cape Town, Nigeria, Sudan. I have learnt a lot while I was in camp in terms of how the game is played, the pace of the game, what to do in tight situations and what you need to do in order to improve as an individual, as partners in the positions that you play and as a group. It has taught me valuable lessons that one slip-up then you are gone,” he says.
