My Dream Team: Eric Tinkler

Former Bafana Bafana holding midfielder Eric Tinkler has selected his Dream Team of former teammates from his playing career.

A South African football legend, Tinkler excelled as a tough-tackling midfielder and represented the national team with aplomb during the nation's most successful years.

The 1.86m-tall midfielder started his professional career at Wits University before earning a move to Portugal in 1992 to represent Vitoria Setubal.

He then enjoyed a spell in Italy with Cagliari before signing for English Premier League side Barnsley in 1997. The Tykes lasted only one season in the top-flight before going back down to division one.

Tinkler returned to Portugal in 2002 and played for Caldas before ending his playing career at Bidvest Wits in 2007 and assisting the likes of Roger de Sa as he ventured into coaching.

He has now been head coach at Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, SuperSport United, Chippa United and Maritzburg United, where he lost his job this week after a poor start to the 2020/21 season.

Tinkler has kept his Dream Team to those he played with rather than coached given he is still very much involved in the game.
