My Dream Team: Lucky Lekgwathi

The great Lucky Lekgwathi selects his Dream Team for the snl24.com/kickoff readers and has to leave out some big Buccaneers names to meet his requirements.

Widely regarded as the best ever captain to lead Orlando Pirates in the PSL era, Lucky Lekgwathi's name will forever be engraved in the club's history books.

He is the only captain to have won a double treble after the club's exploits under Ruud Krol, Julio Leal and Augusto Palacios between 2010 and 2012.

Lekgwathi, who made a point to note that he selected mainly leaders in his team, spoke at length about Mbulelo Mabizela and Benni McCarthy.

"I played with the likes of Tonic [Chabalala], Siya... but Old-John, you know he was the youngest leader ever to win the league at Pirates," he tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"Captain of Pirates, captain of Bafana Bafana... you know that's why he got an opportunity to play in England because he was not an ordinary player.

"I remember my first season at Pirates, he used to guide me. He taught me how to deal with a striker in one-on-one situations.

"Even my first game at Bafana Bafana, I made it because of him. He was covering me against Senegal. He is out of this world. He is one of the best defenders.

"He could play anywhere in the world including for the likes of Real Madrid. It's just that he got an opportunity at Tottenham, and they played him in the wrong position. But even there he excelled you know. He will always be my leader."

On Benni McCarthy: "If I had a problem with a player I would call Benni and we sort him out. Even on the pitch he doesn't want to lose.

"I remember we were playing against Golden Arrows, Thabo Matlaba was trying to clear a ball, the ball hit the pole... yoh! You know he ran all the way from there to tell him, 'Hey transformer! I will kill you!' Telling him he came to South Africa to win trophies.

"Thabo said, 'I'm sorry Benni.' You concede a lousy goal you are in trouble with Benni. So my team is full of leaders."

Check out Lekgwathi's team above, which is so full of leaders even the likes of Happy Jele and Benson Mhlongo don't make the cut!
