Stellenbosch pip PLK City to NBK Cup last 8 spot

Stellenbosch FC booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 win over Polokwane City on Thursday evening.

The Maroons welcomed Fawaaz Basadien back from suspension, while Genino Palace and Lesiba Nku were also recalled, while City had Manuel Sapunga back from injury.

The hosts got the breakthrough 12 minutes in when a flowing move from midfield ended with Polokwane's Bulelani Nikani deflected Devon Titus's shot in his own net.

Titus looked to go on himself five minutes thereafter with a first-time shot from the box following a ball in space, but Sapunga denied him.

Stellies piled more pressure later on when Nku's half-volley from the box bounced off the defence and fell for Titus to take aim at the back-post, but Sapunga repelled again.

Titus finally overcame Sapunga eight minutes before halftime through a first-time finish in off the far post from the area following Khomotjo Lekoloane's cross.

Rise and Shine showed some purpose to the encounter right after the break, but still struggled to breakthrough the Maroons defence.

Stellenbosch were keen to add more goals with Titus continuing to see a lot of the ball in the offensive third, but he had every intention carefully guarded.

Rise and Shine looked to the bench to change their fortunes midway through the half and introduced veteran Puleng Tlolane for Thato Letshedi.

Basadien seemed to have given them a third goal in the latter stages with a top corner finish from a tight angle, but it was called back for offside by the assistant referee as the two goals were enough to seal their spot in the last eight.
