Sundowns set up NBK Cup semi-final date with Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns will meet Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals following a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in the last eight on Friday night.

Wholesale changes by Masandawana saw Zuko Mdunyelwa, Keanu Cupido, Terrence Mashego, Matias Esquivel, Neo Maema and Arthur Sales restored the line-up, while goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner got his first start of the season by Babina Noko.

The start to the clash didn't liven up in the opening-quarter though the intentions to going on the front-foot by the two outfits were very apparent.

Sekhukhune enjoyed the better of the chances where a header from Vusumuzi Mncube forced Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to make a save.

However, the slow passing patterns from the host kept Babina Noko guessing and forced them to apply a low-block structure.

Leaner was called to action a minute to halftime when he pulled across the near post of his goal-line to palm a header from Grant Kekana.

At the other end, Babina Noko had the ball in the net as a first-time pass in the channels saw Elis Rammala slam in the near post, but he had gone early and duly flagged for offside.

Leaner proved decisive midway through the half and produced a double save to deny Iqraam Rayners and Sales profiting from point-blank range.

The missed opportunities then urged coach Miguel Cardoso to bring on the tried and tested in Teboho Mokoena, Lucas Ribeiro and Peter Shalulile.

Sales squandered a golden chance inside the last ten minutes when he slammed a perfectly weighted through ball wide of the top corner.

The opener remained elusive moments later as Leaner pulled off another dramatic save to deny Mokoena heading in from the back-post of the six-yard box.

Leaner came up with the good again in added time and made a superb one-hand save from a top-corner free-kick by Ribeiro.

Sundowns rattled the net minutes later when Shalulile tapped in at the back-post following a cutback, but it was called for offside - leaving the match to extra-time.

The breakthrough came in added time as second-half substitute Jayden Adams tucked in from close-range after good work from Thapelo Morena, seeing Masandawana to victory and to the quarter-finals.
